Between the Meadows of Vigna and Spiazzi dell’acqua

by Paola Loreto | Translated by Hailey Gross

There’s this river that’s a scarlet ribbon
entangled among the stones—brown stones
yellow stones round stones beautiful stones—
and that speaks—only God knows how much it
speaks—and calms me. Takes my spirit
bundles it up and lays it down
on its side, slowly, under the pine tree.
It wants me to listen and stay forever
while it flows, without ennui—for here, time
is full and I don’t feel it and I’m not alone.
